GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE: MEAGAN GOOD

Confession time! Meagan Good is not only a "friend in my head" but she's also my guilty fashion pleasure. I do understand why some people give her a hard time about her style sense. However, I must say that I happen to enjoy watching her liquid legging lovin', sheer top wearin', no purse havin', repeat offender fashion moments. Yes, she really loves her YSL and Bebe pumps and she might have rocked her bamboo earrings a tad too often, but once you find a fashion formula that works for you it can be hard to find replacement items before the trend dies. I always laugh when she gets raked over the coals for sporting the same shoes/earrings/leggings more than once in public because I'm thinking "When did that became a punishable offense?" Besides, umm if you paid $$$$$ for designer shoes and you know you look hot in your earrings/leggings, don't pretend like you wouldn't wear the hell out of 'em too. Hmph.....

And I like it! When I first saw Rihanna's latest tattoo it was one of those "Why didn't I think of that!" moments. I've wanted to get one forever, but I reconsidered when I was in college because EVERYONE and their momma decided to get ink my freshman year. Also, I could never decide exactly what to get, I just knew that I didn't want anything to do with having butterflies or rainbows tatted above my ass crack. Since it's permanant and all I figure it should be something I really love. I think a gun would be something I could look back on and laugh at when I'm 60.

I'm an all- or- nothin' kind of girl and for the past few weeks my focus has been on the fashion section at Clutch magazine (sorry Fashion Euphoria :( ). I am so pleased to be a part of the magazine. Not only has it been great to work with people who are professional and passionate about what they do, but the end result is something that would make any young, ambitious, forward-thinking, well-read, African-American female proud!

FASHION BOREDOM

So all of the 'What to wear for Spring!' magazine issues are beginning to roll in. I'm normally all excited about going to purchase the encyclopedia thick mags so that I can view the awe inspiring layouts filled with items that I can't possibly afford. But this year, I'm flipping through these joints and I'm positively BORED.
I've seen nothing that I felt compelled to try to run out and buy or even fantasize about purchasing in the future. While this may be good for my wallet (I've found nothing on the last 3 shopping trips), it's not all that great for my blog or full time job which requires me to inspired. I hate to write about or buy clothes that I don't absolutely love. I just think that life is too short and my closet space too limited for mediocrity.
I said all that to say that I was just wondering if I was alone in my thought that fashion was kind of slow these days. I'm kind of feeling like I've see it all before. I'm hoping that when I get around to checking out footage from the Fall 07 shows that we'll be seeing something new, fresh, and totally unexpected.

YOUNG, FABULOUS, AND BROKE

My fashion dream is to have a closet that rivals those featured on MTV's Cribs. I want it to be filled to the brim with high-end, dynamic pieces and cheap 'n chic trendy items. I ask you how I am supposed to achieve this dream while balancing student loan debt, the ridiculous cost of living in Los Angeles, and a job that I'm extremely grateful for, but keeps me 1 1/2 paychecks away from skid row? Being Young, fabulous, and broke is no easy feat. Perhaps one day I will get around to reading Suze Orman's book on the subject. I find it amusing that there is a clothing line of the same name (Young,Fabulous, and Broke) who can't even hold up their end of the bargain. No Y.F.B person I know wants to pay $88 for a T-shirt.

Thus begins my love/hate relationship with fashion. Shopping is one of my favorite past times and my job requires that I keep up with the latest trends. Being surrounded by overpriced wares touted as "must haves" (Yes, I am aware that I am guilty of posting such items) can make you feel like everything in your closet is one minute away from becoming obsolete. On the other hand the fashionista in me can't help but to become excited about all of the endless possibilities -aspirational or otherwise-that shopping presents.

I look forward to the day when I can go shopping and not have to be bothered with silly things like price tags! :) Even if I had the means to do so, I can't say that I would be all that enthused about spending thousands on any single clothing purchase. Maybe, what I meant to say was that I'll be glad to see the day when purchasing something that I "must have" won't involve me putting my rent money in jeopardy.

THE GOLDEN GLOBES

Award show fashion usually doesn't move me because A) everyone ends up looking alike or B) I'm left scratching my head going "WTF?". This years show involved more of the later. Certain celebs might want to think about reorganizing their staff (read: fire your stylist). That's not to say that there weren't any fashionable moments, but for the most part I was underwhelmed. Here are a few moments that stuck out in my mind-and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Okay, let's just get this one out of the way. Beyonce's look has pretty much topped everybody's worst dressed list. It wouldn't have been so bad if she didn't...hell, I don't know. The pose, the glitter, it's just all too much.

These looks pretty much exemplify the "WTF?" moments that I was speaking of earlier. Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz are usually so well put together and I expected more from them.

I'm not sure why I thought this dress was knee length, but I liked it better that way. I was all ready to hand out my best dressed award to Salma Hayek before I saw all of that excess fabric. Then again, Any woman who can pull of gathered fabric around her hips is okay with me. This dress would've been so much hotter if if were knee length!

Reese Witherspoon's shoes are really doing it for me. The shoes + the dress...not so much. Am I missing something, cause I just don't get it.

Vanessa Williams looks absolutely stunning from the neck down. If I squint my eyes really hard I can kind of see what she was trying to do.

I'm having mixed feelings about Jennifer Garner's dress. Something about it really speaks to me. I think I'll just toss this one up as being "Interesting".

I hate to come off as one of those people who never has anything positive to say so I would like to add that I was thoroughly impressed by Mary J. Blige and Jada Pinkett Smith. I thought they were absolutely stunning and congrats to all the winners including America Ferrera (sp?), Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, and Forrest Whitaker.

I had the pleasure of flipping through the book on a recent trip to Urban Outfitters and the book cover alone made me want to buy it and put it onto my non-existent coffee table.

The authors, fashion duo Carmia Marshall and Carmen Webber (pictured at left), have given me yet another reason to never throw anything away. You never know when you can use it again! These ladies are about more than just teaching us how to make a haute t-shirt. Their clothing line, Sistahs of Harlem, has been seen on the likes of Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu. Jennifer Hudson has been one busy girl. She's turned up just about everywhere in the past few weeks. She appears to be healthy and happy and her style choices have been on point. Do I even need to mention how refreshing it is to see positive images of a woman whose collar bones and rib cage aren't poking out at us?

Speaking of which I couldn't help but to notice the stark contrast between the body types featured on e-commerce sites geared toward Black women and white women. Can you guess which one is which?

TREND WATCH 2007: 70's/80's chic

This spring we get to see a bit of the 70's and the more sophisticated side of the 8o's. It's very reminiscent of some the kinds of things my mom wore back in the day that -years ago-I wouldn't have been caught dead in (I swear she owned a belt just like the one pictured above). Oh, how times have changed. Also, was I the only sweatin' the high waisted jeans that Thandie Newton's character was sporting during the Pursuit of Happyness ?

This isn't the best picture, but if you saw the movie -which I believe was set in the 80's-you get the idea.
I can't quite put my finger on what draws me to this look, maybe it's the interesting silhouettes, the vintage-y prints, or perhaps I'm just feeling a bit nostalgic. Either way this trend is definitely one of my faves.

I never thought that I would see the day when I would choose a flat shoe over a high heel. Alas, I have reached a point in life where I can no longer suffer needlessly for the sake of fashion, so my money is on shoes that are both stylish and comfortable. Luckily there are many options out there that don't require the sacrifice of either.

Don't be discouraged if most flats don't appeal to you upon first glance. This is especially true if you're used to the glamour of a high heel. Cute flats that don't read as dowdy can be hard to find and in most instances they look better on your feet than they do on a store display or picture. That being said, I highly recommend investing in a pair of flats if you are participating in any kind of activity that requires you to be on your feet all day. You know running around with the balls of your feet burning is not the business! If you feel like you are too "low to the ground" in flats, but still want the same effect, kitten heels and sliver wedges are great alternatives.

TREND WATCH 2007: SEQUINS

There are some interesting developments on this year's fashion horizon. Designers were inspired by everything from Asian culture to the New York club scene. Not sure what that means for your closet? Stay tuned for a series of "Big in '07" trend posts. I had every intention of putting them all together in one post, but that mess was taking forever! Moving on...

First up in the series is Sequins.

Sequins, Sequins everywhere! Apparently the more the better. It looks like fashion is having some kind of Studio 54 or whenever the hell sequins were big moment. I swear this trend was around like 2 years ago and here it is again. Interesting. Stars like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez are already getting in on the act.

BEAUTY BEAT: I'M OBSESSED

As I have stated before beauty regimens aren't really my thing. I just started using moisturizer a few months ago! I'm usually flying by the seat of my pants in the mornings so that leaves little time for make-up. If I use any beauty product for more than 2 consecutive days then that speaks volumes about the results. Such is the case with these little gems.

I've been plagued with under eye puffiness since I don't know when. That is until I discovered Sonia Kashuk's recede under eye treatment (Target, $13). Now I am no longer greeted with "You look so tired" first thing in the A.M. by tactless co-workers. I usually put it on at night before bedtime and I am virtually puff-free the next day!

My boss gave me this amazing lip glaze gift set by Stila (Sephora $28) for X-mas and I love, love, love it! Apparenlty so do a lot of other people because it's sold out on the Sephora website.

Which one will I wear today: Vanilla? Brown Sugar? Apricot? Grapefruit? Starfruit? or Raspberry?

Did I mention how much I love this stuff?!

ROAD TEST: STRAIGHT LEG JEANS

Okay, I've been a boot leg girl for a while now. Having seen the skinny leg jeans being worn so well by various coworkers I decided to switch things up a bit. If you notice I mention denim a lot it's because I wear jeans everyday and they help me pay my rent (I work for a denim company).

Fast forward 3 months and I have had to resign myself to the fact that most skinny jeans are just too severe for my body type (I'm 5 '3 " with a healthy appetite). However, I am happy to report that straight leg jeans are a slightly more forgiving silhouette that lends itself to a similar aesthetic of a "skinny" jean. With a slightly wider knee and leg opening you can wear them, eat a meal, and not look crazy afterwards. I purchased 2 pairs --see pic at inset--from the Gap (their regular jeans don't even fit me...go figure!) and have received such comments as "Have you lost some weight" and "Nice jeans". So maybe getting rid of some of that excess fabric at the bottom can actually have a slimming effect....hmmm.

THINGS TO DO: 2K7 EDITION

As 2006 comes to a close, one can't help but to think about what the next year will bring. I realize that certain areas of my life could use a vast improvement and that I am the one responsible for making these changes. I don't generally subscribe to the notion of making empty promises to ones self, so I tried to come up with a list of general resolutions that (with actual execution) could lead to more specific results.

Some of the things I want to accomplish personally are also things that will be applicable to my closet and upcoming clothing purchases. What? After all, this is a fashion blog :)

1, 2, & 3) Take more risks, etc...The first three things on the list kind of go together. This applies to life and fashion. I feel like I'm stuck in a rut, so I'm thinking that I will try to participate in more activities that aren't a part of my normal routine (work, gym, home...repeat x4). I don't know what these activities are yet, but I'll get to that later.

I get bored very easily so to keep my look fresh, I can A) deviate completely from what's tried and true or B) tweak it a little w/ unexpected accessories, color, or silhouettes. I'll probably do a combination of both.

4) Go for what you want. But first I have to figure out what that is, focus, and make an genuine effort to achieve it. My problem is that lately, what I want tends to change on a daily basis. At one point my goals were always so clear, now for some reason everything is a little fuzzy.

On the fashion tip, I have 20/20 vision about what my wants are. I always have a running list of items that need to be added to my wardrobe. So I am looking forward to crossing some of those items of the list next year.

5) Be grateful. Instead of complaining about all of the things I don't have and justifying the pursuit for acquiring more things(see #4), I will attempt to be grateful for everything that I do have in the meantime.

6) Know when to let go. The sooner I apply this principle to my life/closet, the better off I will be. I have a bag of clothes right now that will probably never see the light of day again just waiting to be hauled off the Salvation Army. Why am I so hesitant to give things away that I know I won't be wearing again?

In my real life, I am starting to realize that there is a difference between giving up/failure and simply separating myself from of situations that aren't working for me.

When is boot/coat...I meant Fall/Winter weather going to kick in?!? It's still like 70 to 80 degrees here in Los Angeles during the day. I guess that just gives me more time to get my cold weather uniform together.

I've been looking for a tall boot with a semi-sensible heel that won't have me wanting to saw my feet off by the end of the day. I think the ones featured below just might work. Solange, Iman, Gabrielle, and Rihanna prove the power of color

There has been much ado about the little black dress (also known as LBD) lately. The fashion staple has been praised for it's chic versatility and flattering nature. I rocked a LBD of my own at a recent soiree and I looked pretty cute if I do say so myself. But guess what? So did the other 9 chicks that were sporting LBD's that evening.

I don't know about you, but I have absolutely no interest in looking like everybody else....especially at a social gathering. In keeping with that thought, opting for color is one of the easiest ways to stand out from the crowd. I'm not talking about tacky "look at me" neon colors, I'm suggesting wearing rich jewel tones or vibrant primary colors. These are easier to pull off and tend to be flattering on most skin tones. Jenny from the block is featured on the cover of Bazaar's December "Best Dressed" Issue. Lopez takes the top honor as best dressed. In regards to her love of fashion she comments:

Nine times out of ten Jen steps out looking like "That chick"....you know the one whose fashion/make-up/shoe game is always tight. I adored her Sweetface fashion collection, which some criticized as being for people who don't understand "real fashion". Though I don't like how the media made her out to be the first women with an ample behind, I have always admired her unapologetically opulent approach to fashion. FASHION TV: UGLY BETTY

I don't even have a television and I love this show. Thank you ABC for making the episodes available online! Ugly Betty chronicles the adventures of Betty Suarez (played by America Fererra) who is the smart but unfashionable assistant to the editor-in-chief of the high fashion publication, Mode. Although Betty is in desperate need of a make over, you can't help but to admire her spirit.

The supporting cast is equally hilarious and endearing. Vanessa L. Williams is a delight to watch as Wilhelmina Slater,the manipulative creative director of Mode. Her facial expressions are priceless and lines like, "He's making me look like Miss Jane Pittman" (in reference to her younger date) and "Were you looking at me when you suggested Qwansa" (in reference to a holiday magazine layout) pretty much sealed the deal for me. Salma Hayek acts as executive producer and guest star.

Ugly Betty airs Thursdays @ 8pm on ABC.

It has come to my attention that the hoody I was searching for in an earlier post is part of the Dereon collection. There's usually about a 30% chance that anything cute Beyonce is wearing is actually associated with her own clothing line. So, imagine my surprise when my friend Chanda told me it was available on back order on the Dereon website.

I think Vibe Vixen is really starting to grow on me. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after being left with no other alternatives (r.i.p. Suede and Honey) I decided to give it a chance. The verdict: It really isn't half bad. I think the turning point (for me at least) occurred when Tracee Ellis Ross was featured on the cover. The magazine's latest cover girl is one of my favorite fashion mavericks, Kelis. I will most definitely be picking that up.

These days I'm really into mixing up patterns and prints. I was discussing this very thing with a fearless fashion friend of mine. She was describing an ensemble that involved a hodge podge of prints and wanted to get my opinion. I thought it was a fabulous idea and something that could be done subtly or taken to the extreme depending on your taste level.

As plaids, animal prints, and stripes take center stage this fall now is the perfect time to mix things up a bit. Layering is also a big trend for fall that easily lends itself to working with prints.

For those with pattern-phobia or if you're not really sure where to start I would suggest the the following:

1) Start out small with accessories that have pattern. Even if it's just a hand bag with a patterned lining.

2) Stay in the same color palette. This mix and match look is easier to pull off if you're working with colors that compliment one another. The beauty of prints is that you have a few colors to choose from when trying to coordinate. Little touches of necessary color can be added with tights or a vibrant belt. It should also be noted that mixing plaids with plaids and stripes with stripes can be considered overkill.

3) Proportion control. Depending on what you're wearing, work with small prints or pieces that have smaller repeated pattern throughout the garment. You don't want any one piece to overpower the outfit. It should all coordinate and flow together.

4) Proportion control: part 2. Keep the silhouettes somewhat simple and proportional. If you're going for volume up top, it looks more balanced if your pants are more fitted and vice versa). This is especially important for this look as things can get crazy very quickly.

Disclaimer:Of course I don't really believe in fashion rules, but we all know that there is a fine line between fashion forward and fashion victim. Fashionistas walk it proudly:)

CLOSET CASES: KIMORA AND BRANDY

Kimora Lee Simmons and Brandy Norwood opened their closets for a recent issue of US Weekly.

Kimora's over-the-top persona extends to her closet where the accoutrements include damask covered walls and a mini bar stocked with Cristal. She revealed that she has a weakness for designer frocks by Roberto Cavalli and Versace. Though I sometimes question her fashion sense and the extremely flammable nature of the materials she uses for her Baby Phat collection, I can't deny that Kimora's closet game is on point.

Brandy claims to be a Juicy Couture and jeans kind of girl who also favors Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and YSL. She decorates her closet with candles, explaining that they add ambiance, and has a special place for her collection of Louis Vuitton pieces (and cowboy hats apparently **see inset**).

Please excuse the blurry and somewhat Stan-ish nature of these frames from Beyonce's Irreplaceable video that made its debut in the U.K. a few weeks ago. Besides, there are much more important issues to discuss.....like the hoody B is sporting for instance.

Hoodies are my cover up of choice this season as I just don't think that trench coats or leather jackets are necessary for L.A.'s cold weather months. This one in particular manages to look casual, cozy, and super cute all at the same time. Unfortunately, I don't know who makes it and don't quite feel like researching it at this very moment. I thought it best to make an official note-to-self, before I lose interest. It probably costs way more than I'm willing to spend, so I will have to keep my eye out for acceptable alternatives as well.

L.A. FASHION WEEK presents SPRING 2007

LA fashion week took place this week and I had the pleasure of attending my first "real" fashion show last night. A friend invited me as her plus one so I jumped at the opportunity. I should have known something was up when A) we weren't pulling into the parking lot of Smashbox studios(where some of the runway shows took place) B) The models were still practicing when we showed up and C) I found out that Andy Dick was the emcee. The theme of the show was a Fashion Walk-off in which the models were to go head-to-head while dazzling us in the latest fashions. The highlights of the evening included waiting around for 3 hours while listening to 80's tunes (this part wasn't actually so bad and I got to meet some cool people), White boys doing the dance routine from Michael Jackson's "Beat it" on the runway, and having a few unrecognizable "celebrity" sightings.

Notice that I make no actual mention of the lace and nylon remnants that some of the designers were trying to pass off as fashion. Let's just say that my friend and I learned some valuable lessons about what we don't want to happen in our future business ventures.

I would have much rather attended the shows featured below that took place earlier in the week. **Sigh** Maybe next year :)

WHAT: Part of H&M's ad campaign featuring Madonna and her crew of dancers, stylists, and vocalists as inspiration for Fall 2006. This is her dance captain, Addie.

WHY: I can't always explain what draws me to certain elements of someone else's style. This look is all about casual sophistication with a bit of fun mixed in: quirky chic. I didn't care much about this outfit until I saw the striped socks with the funky fresh heels. Verdict: Loves it!

Call me a T.I. stan and I may very well be biased (as he's my fave rapper du jour), but I do recognize a great sense of style when I see it. Even when he's getting his Adebisi on, T.I. still has a certain "jen e sais quoi". I know that he's been clowned on the blogs for his lack of muscle mass, but the man does clean up well. Now, what he sees in this woman (ugh! or should I say fug) I'll never know, but to each his own. Anyway, T.I. is featured in the most recent issue of GQ magazine. In an earlier issue (May 2006) of Vibe he was reported to be developing an upscale clothing line.

At times I find the wealth of information available on the internet to be quite exhausting. Surfing the web tends to aggravate my ADHD (I'm self diagnosed) and no one site tends to hold my attention for very long. Every now and then I come across a site that's like a breath of fresh air and I'm glued to the computer for hours, even if it's only to look at the photos! Take a peek at a few that I discovered recently.

EYE CANDY
JMary.net features the couture collections of Los Angeles based designer Jennifer Mary. The site's presentation is simple, but the clothing speaks for itself. I'm especially digging the Holiday '05 collection. Not only because the models featured are African-American, but the styling for the shoot (as with most on this site) is magnificent.

B.O.B (Black owned business) Part:1
Pieces Boutique is the brainchild of husband and wife team Latisha and Colin Darling. These 2 met while honing their skills at retailer Old Navy. The boutiques physical locations are in Harlem and Brooklyn, but if you're not in NY you can experience the delightfully funky and down-to-earth vibe their site piecesofbklyn.com. Described by Suede and Essence magazine as "an underground favorite " I have a feeling that it won't be that way for long (if they haven't blown up already) . The boutique offers designer labels as well as their own private label designs for men and women.

Whenever the young ladies of Danity Kane are photographed together (or separately for that matter) the words "hire", "fire", and, "stylist" are usually mentioned. I imagine that their preparation for public appearances involves Lorriane unloading a garbage bag full of frocks from Forever 21's return rack while shrieking, "Make it work ladies!!"

I often wonder if I were the stylist in question how would I have done things differently so that they would look a bit more..shall we say, polished. A few suggestions spring to mind:

1) Establish a common theme or color palette. I'm not suggesting matching jumpsuits or anything. But I think that a little coordination would provide a sense of direction while still giving you room to express your individual personalities.

2) Edit. Look at yourselves before you leave the house. Ask yourselves, Do these overalls make sense or should I just wear this shirt unrolled with skinny jeans and a belt that would be waaaay cuter? (D.Woods) Did I have this dress on at an appearance last week? (Aundrea) Should I have a bang at all times? (Dawn) Is this headband (Aubrey) or mock turtleneck get-up (Shannon) really necessary? When in doubt ask a friend who you know won't let you walk around looking a mess (because she doesn't want you to embarrass her.)

3) Know your limitations/Less is sometimes more. I know that we are living in an age of layers and excess and I'm all for that when it's done correctly. With that being said self-tanner, eye makeup, jewelry, and clothing layers should be used in moderation unless applied by an expert.

4) Diversify your wardrobe. Please push Diddy for more $$ for your clothing budget. You work hard and darn it you deserve to have nice things. Besides you're in the public eye and have an image to (start) think(ing) about . I too love Forever 21, but variety is the spice of life. Zara, H&M, and a host of other stores have a lovely merchandise assortment at reasonable prices.

I think I've given you enough information to begin the transformation. Make us proud....Work it out ladies.

THE CATALYST

If I had to name the single most influential factor on my sense of self (fashion included) it would have to be my mother. She would be the one on the far right. This is my favorite picture of my mother and her sisters back in the day. As you can see I come from a proud lineage of fashionistas. :) I wish I had more pictures with me, but I wouldn't want to risk them being lost in the mail! Trust me when I say she looks just as fresh in all the photos. What I love best about this one is that they probably made the dresses that they have on.

My mother is in her 60's now and raised 3 kids virtually alone. This woman was fly well into her 50's. Hell... She's still fly. I will forever marvel at how she managed to look so pulled together after having to deal with us. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. She has always been gorgeous in an effortless sort of way. (What was it about women of a certain era that they always looked like this?)

Whenever I try to pinpoint where my love of fashion comes from, my mind always goes back to old pictures of my mother. Most of what I know about fashion is based on instinct and I know that I got that from her. So I guess you could say that mom is the catalyst, the jump-off, from which my love of fashion began.

I know that the last thing the world needs is another blog. However, everyone has a story to tell and dammit I want to be heard! Really this is just a way for me to channel my pent up creative energy and find my voice. A girl can go crazy you know! I have always loved fashion and currently work in the industry. I am not where I want to be in my career and that is part of my motivation for starting this blog. I am hoping that with a bit of faith and confidence that things will start to happen. Until then this blog is all I got!

My goal is to write about subjects in fashion that interest me. This includes my fascination with "street" fashion (so much more awe inspiring than the runway), independent boutiques, and of course select celeb takes on the current trends. Stick with me to see how the drama unfolds. :)
